The vaccination should be administered during every pregnancy, regardless of previous vaccinations. Statutory health insurance plans cover the costs.

You and your family members can get vaccinated at our practice. Please simply make an appointment with us.

What is whooping cough?

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease. It is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. It is transmitted through droplet infection. Whooping cough can occur at any age.

The disease is particularly dangerous for babies. In them, it often does not present with the typical cough. Instead, it frequently leads to breathing pauses, and in the worst cases, respiratory arrest. Most affected infants require hospital treatment. Additionally, whooping cough can repeatedly trigger secondary conditions such as pneumonia or middle ear infections.

How does the vaccine protect?

Babies can only be vaccinated themselves starting at two months of age. Until then, they are unprotected. Vaccination during pregnancy provides what is known as “maternal protection.” The expectant mother produces antibodies. These are transferred to the unborn baby via the bloodstream. This way, the newborn is protected from birth while its own immune system is still maturing. Incidentally, this protection is not passed on through breast milk.

Is the vaccination safe?

Yes. The vaccination does not increase the risk of complications. It is well-tolerated and has no negative effects on the baby. It has been used for many years in the U.S., the U.K., and Austria, among other places, with very good results.

Further Information

You can find more detailed information on the website of the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI). EFCNI is Europe’s first organization dedicated to advocating for the interests of premature and newborn infants and their families. Parents and medical professionals work together there to improve the care and health of newborns.

STIKO recommends vaccination against whooping cough between the 28th and 32nd weeks of pregnancy, or earlier if there is a risk of premature birth.
